FITTING THE NFL MOLD
Ideally, a RBs height will be between 5'9" and 6'1" and he will weigh somewhere between 200 and 230 lbs. Harvey is coming into the league undersized for the position and will likely need to put on some more muscle prior to training camp. The two greatest predictors of NFL success for RBs in the combine are the 40 Yard Dash and the Broad Jump. These test a players speed as well as their lower body explosiveness. Harvey tested highly in both events but due to his size, it was expected of him. With his body mass taken into account he tested in the 91st percentile in Speed Score and 89th percentile in Burst Score. His age is also a concern as he will be coming into the league as a 24-year-old rookie so teams know they will not be resigning him after his rookie contract expires.
COLLEGE PRODUCTION
Harvey was never an every down back in college with his most touches (252) coming last season. NFL teams raise red flags when a player has 700 or more carries in college or 300+ carries in a season. Harvey never sniffed these numbers. His YPC (6.8) is truly elite and shows that despite his small frame, he is able to pound the rock and create big plays.
WATCHING THE TAPE
Harvey pairs good ball carrier vision with elite acceleration making him a dangerous weapon coming out of the back field. He is able to scan the field quickly and then burst to the hole or take it outside. Harvey has the patience that reminds me of LeVeon Bell. He will wait for the blocks to develop or hold the ball and let the defense show its hand and then attack accordingly. His hands are buttery smooth like a converted WR and doesn't rely on pinning the ball to his body. He has breakaway speed that if he gets in the open field, it's going to be hard to catch him.
THE LANDING SPOT
Harvey was one of my favorite backs in this draft so I’m going to try to temper my excitement over him landing with Sean Payton in Denver and say he should be drafted just behind Barkley as the RB 2 overall. Ok maybe I’m joking there but I still think that this is a great destination for Harvey. I can see him opening the season as the RB 1 in Denver and at worst, the RB 2 stealing lots of work from McLaughlin. McLaughlin is not a starting back and Estime is better suited as a guy who can come in and give the starter a breather. The Denver offensive line has silently become one of the best lines in the league and returns all 5 starters.
WHERE TO DRAFT HIM
In fantasy football, Harvey belongs to be in the conversation amongst guys like Judkins and Henderson. In redraft leagues, Harvey should be a mid-draft pick in the 6th-8th rounds. In dynasty rookie drafts, I’m taking a swing and would draft him towards the end of the first round.
