FITTING THE NFL MOLD
Ideally, a TE will have a height between 6'4" and 6'6", weigh somewhere between 245 and 260 lbs, and have an arm length over 33". While blocking is a great trait to have, we want to look for TEs who have receiving upside. Therefore, the most important tests to predict success at the next level will be the 40-yard dash, the 10-yard split, and the vertical jump. We're looking for scores around 4.6-4.75 for the 40, 1.55-1.65 for the 10 yd split, and 32-36" for the vertical. Ferguson is a prospect that leaves scouts mouths salivating. He had the fastest 40 time, tied for the fastest 10 yd split time, and he had the highest vertical jump in his class. He has very high Speed Scores and Burst Scores as well as an exceptional catch radius. He's what would come out of a machine if scouts could genetically engineer TEs.
COLLEGE PRODUCTION
Two huge factors that scouts are looking for at this position are: Do they have consistent hands to be a QBs safety valve and are they truly a TE or an OL or WR in disguise? Ferguson definitely leans more to the receiving TE route, but he is able to do enough to not make him a total liability in the blocking game. He didn't see a ton of work in college but part of that largely has to do with the way the team schemed him. They used his athleticism and size to pick up difficult downs and turn short passes into YAC opportunities.
WATCHING THE TAPE
Ferguson is one of the few natural runners among TEs in this class. He has good contact balance and is able to dance around defenders while on the move. While his blocking is passable, it is also laughable at times as he'll trip over his own teammates or whiff on a speedy defender. He was able to frequently take short screen passes for big gains by showing the patience to let his blockers get to their man and follow them instead of outrunning his protection. He has a fast burst off the line which makes him dangerous for quick action plays in short yardage and red zone scenarios. He's a competitor and has all the skills he needs to be a problem in the NFL.
THE LANDING SPOT
I have no idea how this pick by the Rams is flying so far under the radar. The Rams went into this draft wanting to land a TE to help bolster their squad. They traded out of the first round, landing a first rounder next year and then used their first selection (a high 2nd round pick) in the draft to take the uber athletic TE from Oregon. Higbee hasn't lived up to the hype we had for him, and his play has noticeably declined as well as his health. Higbee has only played in 18 games over the last 2 years. In that span he has just 55 catches. It's possible Ferguson wins the job in training camp, and worst-case scenario is he is still on the field stealing snaps away from Higbee. The Rams drafted him with plans to use him early. I like that he is also attached to Stafford to start his career.
WHERE TO DRAFT HIM
Ferguson should mostly go undrafted in redraft leagues but is worth a TE2 flyer if you have the roster space. In dynasty rookie drafts, I think mid 2nd round is appropriate and if you really need TE help, I wouldn't gawk at an early 2nd round selection.
