FITTING THE NFL MOLD
Ideally, a RBs height will be between 5'9" and 6'1" and he will weigh somewhere between 200 and 230 lbs. Skattebo is a short but solid bruising back that has the build to be successful at the next level. The two greatest predictors of NFL success for RBs in the combine are the 40 Yard Dash and the Broad Jump. These test a players speed as well as their lower body explosiveness. Skattebo did not test well or at all in some categories which isn't a big surprise. He isn't a physical specimen, but he makes up for it in aggressiveness and heart.
COLLEGE PRODUCTION
Skattebo has just two years of college action with only one seeing full starter reps. NFL teams raise red flags when a player has 700 or more carries in college or 300+ carries in a season. Skattebo is nowhere close to being overused as he has just 526 touches in his college career. He has a lower YPC (5.8) than a lot of other RBs in this draft but that is still a very serviceable number. It is easy to forget that this year has a plethora of talented RB prospects, which is skewing the number for some of these players which would normally be thought of higher.
WATCHING THE TAPE
Athleticism isn't going to jump off the film when you watch Skattebo, but every run looks like it could be featured on Kyle Brandt's Angry Runs. He is able to get lower than incoming defenders and shed the first tackle attempt with ease. He has good body control keeping his knees off the turf even when he is making contact with a defender. He excels in inside zone runs but his sideline-to-sideline speed is questionable raising concerns for his ability to bounce a play outside if needed without getting tackled in the backfield. Ball security is also a concern as he had 10 fumbles. His bruising running style will work best in short yardage and goal line situations.
THE LANDING SPOT
The new muscle hamster ends up a member of the New York Giants and will be expected to be a productive member of their RB room. Tracy Jr did enough last year to solidify him as the starter so Cam will be battling for the RB 2 spot with Devin Singletary. This was a great pick for the Giants as they deepen their RB room for the next 4 years on a cheap contract. It may not be good for fantasy, but it's a great move for the organization.
WHERE TO DRAFT HIM
In redraft leagues, I'm staying away from Skattebo. He doesn't have the athletic ability to push the staff to give him more snaps and is a perfect fit to give the main back/backs breathers. In dynasty rookie drafts, I'm much lower than consensus. He is a late 2nd round selection in my opinion.
