FITTING THE NFL MOLD
Ideally, a WRs height will be between 6'1" and 6'3" and he will weigh somewhere between 205 and 215 lbs. Lane has a smaller frame that is going to make him be relegated to the slot for most teams. The three greatest predictors of NFL success for WRs in the combine are the 40 Yard Dash, the 3-Cone Drill, and the Vertical Jump. These test a players speed as well as their ability to high point a ball. Not only did Lane test well, but he also finished in the top 3 at his position in each event. While his adjusted Speed Score put him in the 80th percentile, he really shined in his fast twitch and acceleration metrics as he has a Burst Score in the 95th percentile and an Agility Score in the 89th percentile.
COLLEGE PRODUCTION
Two factors that scouts will raise red flags on are if a receiver has multiple 100+ reception seasons along with injuries and if they play in air-raid or spread heavy systems. It's pretty concerning that Lane played 3 seasons at Middle Tenn St and 2 seasons at Virginia Tech but never had over 69 receptions or 1k yards in a season. He failed to stand out vs questionable defensive competition. He appears to be more of an athletic project than a player that can come in and play right away.
WATCHING THE TAPE
Lane is a true deep threat target as he can outrun defenders and take the ball to the house. He is incredibly shifty, and arm tacklers don't stand a chance. He was used frequently on pitches behind the LOS and uses his speed to beat defenders to the edge and pick up big yards. He isn't afraid to run up field and juke out every defender in front of him. He doesn't appear to have the best contact balance as defenders are able to bring him down without needing clean hits like swiping at his legs or popping him with their shoulder.
THE LANDING SPOT
Washington was actually a perfect landing spot for Lane. He wasn't coming into the league as a starting caliber WR and now he gets time to sit behind guy like McLaurin, Deebo, Brown, and Gallup who have all had success in the NFL. He will also be tied to one of the best young QBs in football. Lane will get playing time this season but is likely battling for the WR 5 spot with Luke Mcaffrey.
WHERE TO DRAFT HIM
Lane is un-draftable in redraft leagues due to him being buried on the depth chart. In dynasty rookie leagues, Lane is best suited as a 3rd round pick that you'll likely have to wait awhile for.
