FITTING THE NFL MOLD

Ideally, a RBs height will be between 5'9" and 6'1" and he will weigh somewhere between 200 and 230 lbs. Sampson is a little undersized for the position which will raise durability concerns for the next level. The two greatest predictors of NFL success for RBs in the combine are the 40 Yard Dash and the Broad Jump. These test a players speed as well as their lower body explosiveness. Sampson did not test for every event at the Combine and the ones he did compete in, he failed to deliver. He ran a 4.42 40 at his pro day which with his size taken into account gives him a poor 52nd percentile in Speed Score. He is in the 66th percentile in Burst Score.

COLLEGE PRODUCTION

Sampson was barely used his first two seasons before taking over as the main back in 2024. NFL teams raise red flags when a player has 700 or more carries in college or 300+ carries in a season. Sampson ends his college career with just 462 touches. He will be coming into the league fresh with minimal previous injuries. He has minimal receiving experience as he had just 40 receptions in 3 seasons.

WATCHING THE TAPE

Sampson utilizes his size well as he is able to sneak through smaller gaps that defenders don't think he will attempt. He is shifty and able to read the defense and cut to where the space is to attack. He runs tough and keeps moving his legs once he gets stood up allowing time for a pile to develop so his lineman can help him push. His size is a concern for the next level as defenders are able to stop a lot of his momentum at first contract. He gets stood up on the goal line and frequently and is unable to power his way across for the score.

THE LANDING SPOT

I would have loved this spot if the Browns hadn't already drafted Judkins. He has a chance in training camp to overtake both Judkins and Ford for the starting job, but he has an uphill battle. Ford is familiar with the system and Judkins was drafted two rounds earlier so he more than likely slots in as the RB 3. The Browns have a decent line and like to run the ball so if Sampson can establish himself early, he could be quite the value in dynasty.

WHERE TO DRAFT HIM

I'm avoiding Sampson in redraft leagues, and I'll spend the waiver priority on him later in the year if he starts seeing more playing time or I get desperate. In dynasty rookie drafts, I would take a chance on Sampson in the late 2nd round or into the third.
